At Scrap Management Industries (SMI), safety is not just a top priority — it’s priorities one, two and three. Every employee at each scrap yard is hyper conscientious about maintaining a safe environment for other employees, our customers and the community.
Safety: Our Priority
and a Core Value
Safety is Never
Taken Lightly
OSHA and EPA Guidelines are Followed Strictly
SMI adheres to all Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines, ensuring our scrap metal recycling yards maintain the highest standards of safety and environmental responsibility.
Our compliance efforts focus on:
Reducing workplace risks to protect our employees.
Ensuring our operations have minimal environmental impact.
Meeting and exceeding all state and federal regulations.
ReMA’s Best Industry Practices are Implemented and Exceeded
As proud members of the Recycled Materials Association (ReMA) and recipients of the Circle of Safety Excellence medallion, we don’t just meet environmental standards — we help set expectations of what scrap metal recycling should be by:
Continuously adopting ReMA’s best practices to improve safety and efficiency.
Staying informed of industry developments to protect our workforce and environment.
Investing in and integrating the latest safety technologies into our daily operations.
A Culture of Safety
We know that safety begins and ends with every team member equally committed to operate safely, efficiently and in compliance with all local, state and federal laws and regulations every minute of the day. Which is why we provide ongoing training and require active participation. Our safety director leads a dedicated safety team, making sure that employees do their parts. Key components of safety culture include:
- Providing first day safety orientation and training for new hires, tailored specifically to the scrap metal recycling industry.
- Providing job shadowing opportunities and hands-on trainings to new hires with no previous experience.
- Educating employees through weekly safety and hazard recognition trainings, and manager-led safety meetings where recent incidents, near misses and relevant safety topics are discussed.
- Empowering employees to use their “Stop Work Authority” if they believe a work process or environment is unsafe.
- Following our daily maintenance and equipment inspection program to ensure that all equipment stays in good working condition and is safe to operate.
- Conducting safety audits at each of our facilities to ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
