Since opening our doors in 1973, we’ve grown from a single yard into a leading ferrous and nonferrous scrap metal recycling partner with multiple locations across the region. That growth has never been about just getting bigger — it’s been about getting better.

Today, we operate as Scrap Management Industries (SMI) — a name that better reflects who we are and where we’re going. What started as Midwest Scrap Management has evolved into a company built for tomorrow’s environment, with a broader reach, stronger capabilities and deeper roots in our communities than ever before.
Where We Started
Recycling scrap metal has always been essential work. Even before “sustainability” became a business buzzword, our teams were hard at work helping individuals, small businesses, farmers and industrial partners turn scrap into something more — more value, more opportunity and a positive environmental impact.
Back then, we were known as Midwest Scrap Management. We operated with a deep sense of responsibility to our customers and the St. Joseph community we serve. That name reflected our beginnings, where integrity and relationships mean everything.
And it worked. Customers knew us as dependable, straightforward and honest — a company you could count on to do what we said we’d do. And while the name served us well, it didn’t fully capture the scale or scope of our operations today.
Where We Are Now
As of late 2023, we began transitioning our company name to Scrap Management Industries (SMI) across all locations. This transition marked an important milestone: a unified name that represents our full capabilities and continued commitment to recycling for tomorrow’s environment.
In December 2024, our Kansas City and St. Joseph scrap yards joined that evolution, operating under Scrap Management Industries d/b/a Midwest Scrap Management. While you may still see the Midwest Scrap name on certain materials or signage, these locations are fully part of the SMI family, offering the same trusted team, transparent processes and commitment to service that our residential and industrial customers rely on.
As SMI, we’ve aligned all our yards under one banner, but we haven’t lost sight of what matters. We continue to lead the industry in clean, safe and efficient facilities, transparent pricing, and responsive service designed around what customers need most, whether that’s fast turnaround, help with regulations or scrap metal recycling solutions built for scale.
We also maintain deep connections to the communities we serve. Through the SMI Foundation, we support local initiatives and organizations, investing in the well-being and sustainability of our neighborhoods because our success only matters if it helps build stronger communities.
